I still remember when my body issues began. I was probably about 7 or 8 and had been spending the day with my girlfriends and one of their houses. There was a conversation about drinking milk, and I shared that I didn’t really like milk and I never drank it. The girls quickly came to the consensus that I would be thinner and in better shape if I would drink milk, specifically fat free milk.

At 7 or 8 years old, I believed myself to be fat. I wasn’t. I look back at pictures and I had long legs and arms, along with a round belly. No, I wasn’t skinny like my friends were, but I wasn’t fat. Instead of standing up for myself, I believed them and started down a road of body hatred. Continue reading →

3 Things: I’d Like to Never Hear in a Song Again

Ariana Grande, Sirens, songs, Whistles

With so many annoying songs out there, its hard to pinpoint the things that cause me to hate them so much. Here are the 3 things that I hate hearing in songs, and I wish “artists” would stop using.

1. Whistles. There was a Snoop Dogg song on the radio the other day and while I normally like his music, I found myself severely annoyed. I realized it was because there was a whistle going off every few seconds like some sort of quirky beat keeper. I felt like it was the late 90’s and I was in my own personal hell; a rave with trance music and adults sucking on pacifiers.

2. Sirens. Nothing is more unnerving than driving your car and hearing sirens that you can’t find. You go through the panic of “am I being pulled over?” to “am I going to get crushed by a fire engine that comes out of nowhere into this intersection?”.  I don’t think anyone’s music sounds more “hood” just because they have sirens in the background.

3. Ariana Grande. I’m sorry, I just don’t know why this chick is everywhere. Her voice is okay. She looks like a 12 year old dressing up like a hooker for halloween. Do we need to keep trying to make her into a sex symbol? Can’t she just be a Disney star or something?

3 Things; Instagram, Broad City and Home Birth in Maryland

Today I give you another 3 things I think you should know about!

1. Chatbooks.com  Are you an instragram junkie? Do you have a growing collection of photos you’re not sure how to keep for memory sharing beyond your cell phone? Check out chatbooks.com. 60 of your photos will be printed in a 6×6 book for only $6 (shipping is free). I believe it’s set up so every 60 photos it automatically creates a new book. No muss no fuss! I’m going to give it a whirl, but since I’m a lazy instagramer, it may take me a while to get to 60 pics.

2. Broad City  For someone that claims to not have enough time to watch tv, I seem to watch quite a bit lately. I discovered Broad City after an article on Jezebel mentioned the show. The show offered a great answer to the “friendly” idiots that when walking by you on the street will say “you’re so pretty, you should smile”. I went and watched a few episodes and I love it.

If you find yourself to be more on the conservative side of life, it may not be for you… but then again, this blog most likely wouldn’t be either. So I guess if you’re even reading this it means you will probably find amusement in Broad City (on Comedy Central)

3. HB9/SB105  Recently the group Maryland Families for Safe Birth successfully got the bill HB9/SB105 passed through the HGO committee. This is bringing the state of Maryland one step closer to allow the licensure and legalization of Certified Professional Midwives . This is a great success and very important women and their reproductive rights.

One thing that was forced to be dropped by the committee was the inclusion of VBAC’s (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean).  This is extremely important to me as I someday want to have the opportunity to have a VBAC, preferably at home. The problem is that because CPM’s are not legal in the state of Maryland, the only option is a Certified Nurse Midwife (which there are not many of) or finding a hospital that claims itself to be VBAC supportive.

I ask you, if you live in the state of Maryland, and believe that a woman has the right to give birth how and where she wishes, with a supportive, educated and legal provider, then I ask that you take a moment to read this excerpt from MFSB and write the governors office.  Below that is also a short video about VBAC and the importance of giving women access and opportunity to VBAC.

PLEASE HELP NOW BY TELLING THEM YOU ARE UPSET ABOUT THIS: We need your voices to go straight to the top to pave the way for a win on VBAC. Please write, email, and call the governor’s office saying 1) you are so mad that DHMH kept VBAC out of bill HB9/SB105 2) why you think this is wrong and 3) ASK: “Please review the available data quickly and include VBAC in the scope for midwives as other states do”

3 Things: What I Want From YOU for Christmas

Christmas, Facebook, mimosas, positive energy, prayers, share my blog, smile, strangers

Yes, I have a request for my readers for Christmas gifts for moi. It won’t cost you any money, but it will make people happy, I promise.

1. Smile at a stranger. You never know what someone is going through when you pass them on the street/grocery store aisle/ running path. Smile at someone, they may even smile back. If they don’t it’s probably because they are still in a state of shock because no one smiles at each other any more. With one smile you have the potential to change someones mood and how they feel the rest of the day.

Easy, see!

2. Say a prayer or send positive energy to the people that have lost loved ones. This time of year is so hard for those that have lost someone they care about. Take a moment to appreciate the special people in your life, and to wish peace and comfort to those who really need it right now. It is the little things that can be powerful.

Okay, this next one requires action.

3. Share my blog! Please, send the link or share the Facebook page with all of your friends…or at least 1 person you think would enjoy it. This will not only make me extremely happy, but the person that now has this blog in their life will also be happy. Unless of course they hate awesome things, then they may not appreciate my blog.

That’s it! I’m all out of requests for Christmas this year…well, except for Christmas morning mimosas that is.

3 Things: The Toddler is Going to School!

Yesterday the hubby and I took the toddler for an orientation class at his new school. Now when I say school, I mean a twice a week in the morning, just to get accustomed to being out of the house and with kids his own age.

Being there for two hours, to experience what a day with the kiddos is like made me realize a few things. Here are three of them:

1. Our toddler needs some help on his verbal skills. He has a bunch of words that all mean about 10 different things.  The other toddlers in the class had words that could actually be found in the dictionary. Unlike our childs “MaMoe” which represents the remote, The Muppets, Animal (of the Muppets), and anything Sesame Street (including crackers).  I’m willing to give him a little time in school to see if he can find some new consonants, but if not speech therapy is in his future.

2. Even tho I have a kid, I still don’t really like kids. These toddlers are cute, and its not personal, but the ability they have to do the same exact thing over and over and over, and think that it’s amazing each and every time really bores me. During playground time another little toddler brought a ball over to me to play. I bounced it with him back and forth for about 5 minutes before I was over it. Of course he was not, so I had play a game of hide and seek, which I failed to include him in, so I would not be found.

This school is a co-op, which means parents have to give time in the classroom about once a month. I’ve already signed up hubby to do the first round. Three hours of pretending I’m not severely annoyed by toddlers, and having the responsibility to wipe their boogery noses is going to take some time to mentally prepare.

3. Thank God for teachers. I mean these people spend all day with our kids, and really do give a shit about them.  Day in and day out, it is their goal to see them grow, learn and hopefully enjoy themselves.

Our toddler’s teacher Ms. C. had a pumpkin that was cut open for the kids to feel the insides. She had a glue station set up for them to make their own faux pumpkin patches.  As a parent, you can see when someone has genuine patience and kindness towards your child, and it makes it so much easier to entrust them with your little person. I will really try to embody some of that when it’s my turn to co-op.

For now, my weekend will be spent getting things like a backpack, lunch bag and snacks (nut free) to send my little one off to school with…. and lots of diapers, because this kid has no clue what potty training is.  Good luck Ms. C., good luck.

3 Things: Football

Bon Jovi, Booyah, boycott, Buffalo Bills, burn, football, Livin on a Prayer, Ralph Wilson, Ray Rice, social sports, Toronto

So this will be the portion of the blog that I pick 3 either random or associated things to talk about. Honestly, today, it’s a way for me to write a post without doing too much research and re-writing, i.e. lazy bones post.

3 Things: Football

#1: Winning! My two favorite teams won this past weekend, the Buffalo Bills and BOOYAH!

*If you don’t know, Booyah! is the coed social sports team I’ve been playing on since I moved to Maryland almost 10 years ago.  We are a team that other teams look at pre-game and think they’ve got it made. Until we kick.their.ass.  I could go on and on and on about how much I love playing football with these people, but I will save that for another day.

#2: The Buffalo Bills will remain the BUFFALO Bills! When word of Bon Jovi and the Toronto group bidding on the Bills came out, the city revolted. I swore that if Bon Jovi took ownership of our team to move to Toronto (or anywhere other than Buffalo) I would do two things: I would NEVER again sing Livin On A Prayer and I would personally organize the Metro DC burning of all things Bon Jovi.

I’m SUPER relieved I get to keep rocking out to Livin On A Prayer; I’m going to a friends wedding this weekend and it’s one of my favorite drunk songs. I’m also relieved to not have to organize the burning party because I know what a bitch it can be to try and get a permit to do anything in DC.

#3: Burn It! I said it yesterday on my Facebook page, but I mean it. If you own a Ray Rice jersey I hope you burn it. I have some lighter fluid and matches I won’t be using on old Bon Jovi cd’s now, so call me if you need some help.
